Gqeberha

Gqeberha, formerly Port Elizabeth, is the 'Friendly City' on Algoa Bay in the Eastern Cape, and for cricket it matters more than its size suggests: St George's Park staged the first Test ever played in South Africa, in 1889, and is the country's oldest Test ground — and the only one with a permanent brass band that plays through the day. It is a plain, warm working port rather than a scenic showpiece, with long beaches, a fair amount of wind, and the malaria-free Addo Elephant Park about an hour away.

Chief Dawid Stuurman International Airport (PLZ) — formerly Port Elizabeth Airport — sits only about 3km from the city centre and the beachfront, one of the shortest airport-to-city hops in South Africa, roughly 5 to 10 minutes by car. Ride-hailing operates here and metered taxis are available; most beachfront hotels are 10 to 15 minutes away. Car rental is worth it if you plan to visit Addo or drive the Garden Route.

St George's Park is in the city centre, close to the beachfront and only a few kilometres from the airport. It is South Africa's oldest Test ground — the first Test here was in 1889 — and it seats around 19,000 among old trees and a heritage pavilion. Its best-known feature is the brass band that has played at the cricket for generations, something no other Test ground has. It is an easy walk from central hotels and a short ride from the beachfront.

Gqeberha is a natural base for the Eastern Cape and the eastern end of the Garden Route. Addo Elephant National Park, a malaria-free Big Five reserve, is about an hour north. Jeffreys Bay, one of the world's best-known surf breaks, is around an hour west. Private reserves such as Shamwari are within about 90 minutes, and the Garden Route runs on toward Tsitsikamma and Knysna.

Gqeberha is a car city, and renting one makes sense if you want to reach Addo or the Garden Route. Ride-hailing works in town but can be patchy, so allow time on busy days. The beachfront is walkable, and because the ground is central, a short ride or hotel shuttle covers most match-day trips. Public transport is limited for visitors.

The city is nicknamed the 'Windy City' for good reason, and wind is the thing to plan around more than temperature. October and November are mild spring months, usually about 18 to 25°C (64 to 77°F), with a mix of sun and passing cloud and the odd shower. Afternoon wind off Algoa Bay is common, so pack a light windproof layer even on a warm day.

Summerstrand and the beachfront are the usual first choice, close to the sea, restaurants and a short ride to the ground. Humewood is a quieter beach option, while staying Central puts you within walking distance of St George's Park. Richmond Hill is the small dining suburb, and Walmer, near the airport, has plenty of guesthouses.

In the city, the top-end options are the beachfront hotels around Summerstrand and the Boardwalk complex. Most of the region's premium lodging, though, is on the private game reserves such as Shamwari and Amakhala, about 90 minutes out, which some visitors use as a base and day-trip to the cricket. Beachfront boutique guesthouses are a smaller-scale alternative in town.

Gqeberha is good value next to Cape Town. Budget rooms in Humewood or Central start around R500 to R900 a night ($30 to $50). Mid-range beachfront hotels run about R1,000 to R2,000 ($55 to $115), and the top city hotels sit around R2,000 to R4,000 ($115 to $225). Private safari lodges are a separate, higher tier again, usually all-inclusive.

The food here is casual and leans on the sea, and the thing to order is the local calamari, which the Eastern Cape is known for. The beachfront has plenty of restaurants with a sea view, and Stanley Street in Richmond Hill is the main dining strip, a walkable row of small eateries and bars a short ride from the ground.

Nights out here are easygoing rather than late and loud. Stanley Street in Richmond Hill is the main cluster of bars and restaurants, the Boardwalk complex has bars and entertainment around the casino, and the beachfront has relaxed spots for a post-match drink. Expect a slower pace than Cape Town or Johannesburg.

Gqeberha is generally relaxed for visitors who stick to the main areas. The beachfront, Summerstrand and Boardwalk are the busiest and best-patrolled parts of town. Take the usual South African city precautions: use ride-hailing rather than walking long distances after dark, be cautious around Central and North End at night, and keep valuables out of sight. At the beach, swim only where lifeguards are on duty and mind the currents.

The defining sound at St George's Park is the brass band, which plays between overs and through the day — no other Test ground has one, and it sets the mood more than the scoreboard does. It is an old, tree-lined ground with a heritage pavilion and a family, day-out feel rather than a hostile one, and the Eastern Cape crowd tends to be warm and good-humoured. Knowing you are watching cricket where South Africa's Test history began adds to it.

Gqeberha pairs well with a couple of days either side of the cricket. Addo Elephant National Park, a malaria-free Big Five reserve about an hour north, is the standout and doable as a day trip. Private reserves like Shamwari are a bit further for those wanting a lodge stay. Jeffreys Bay, an hour west, is a famous surf town, and the Garden Route runs on from here toward Tsitsikamma and Knysna.
