In the larger cities a well-connected district with good transport can be more comfortable than staying immediately beside the stadium. In the smaller cities, central accommodation is usually close to the ground anyway.

Is it worth changing hotels between matches?

If your matches are in different cities, you will need to move. If they are in the same city, one base for the whole stay is simpler and often cheaper than repeated check-ins. Plan around the grounds you intend to visit once the schedule is known.

Which airports are closest?

O.R. Tambo in Johannesburg takes most international arrivals and also serves Pretoria and Centurion. Cape Town International and King Shaka in Durban are the other major hubs. Smaller venues are served by regional airports, and the host cities in Zimbabwe and Namibia are reached via Harare, Bulawayo and Windhoek.

Do I need to rent a car?

It depends on where you stay. In Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and the Zimbabwean cities, ride-hailing, transfers and the Gautrain cover most needs. A hire car is more useful for Paarl and the Winelands, for Namibia, and for anyone linking several venues or exploring beyond the cities.

Are hotels likely to sell out?

Popular districts and dates can fill well ahead of a major tournament, and the smaller cities have limited supply to begin with. Booking early, with free-cancellation rates where offered, is the most reliable way to secure a suitable place.

Types of accommodation, and when each makes sense

Luxury hotels

Five-star chains and landmark independents cluster in the larger cities, above all in Cape Town and around Sandton in Johannesburg. Choose one for concierge support, on-site dining and dependable service, and if a central, well-connected base matters more than the nightly rate.

Boutique hotels

Small, design-led and owner-run hotels are a Southern African strength, particularly in Cape Town, the Winelands and the coastal towns. Couples and independent travellers tend to prefer them for the character and personal touch a chain cannot match.

Business hotels

Dependable mid-range chains sit near the business districts and transport links of every major city. The appeal is consistency: predictable rooms, easy airport and stadium access, and none of the luxury premium.

Serviced apartments

Apartments with a kitchen and separate living space are common in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban and Umhlanga, and make sense for longer stays, families and groups. Cooking for yourself also keeps a multi-week trip from turning into a run of restaurant bills.

Flights and internal connections

Most international visitors arrive through one of South Africa's three main hubs: O.R. Tambo International in Johannesburg, the country's largest airport, followed by Cape Town International and King Shaka International in Durban. Johannesburg has the widest choice of long-haul connections, which makes it the usual first stop.

The host cities are spread over long distances, so internal flights are the practical way to move between regions — for example between Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban — where driving would take many hours. The smaller South African venues are served by regional airports, while the Zimbabwean and Namibian host cities are reached via Harare, Bulawayo and Windhoek.

Driving is a reasonable alternative for shorter, related hops, such as Johannesburg to Centurion and Pretoria, or Cape Town out to Paarl in the Winelands. For longer legs, a flight usually makes better use of limited time between matches. For route-by-route detail, see the flights guide.

Booking and cancellation

Major hotel chains and booking platforms generally offer two kinds of rate: a flexible rate that can be cancelled free of charge up to a stated deadline, and a cheaper non-refundable rate that cannot. While the schedule is unconfirmed, flexible rates are the safer choice, letting you hold a place and adjust once fixtures and tickets are announced.
